Best Practices
Best practices “the point of view of Slovakia”
Exchange visits with our partners from French Guyana and Italy was very interesting and fullinspirating experience. We had oportunity to understand the system of work in various governmental and non profit organisations dealing with homeless people and other social issues.
In French Guyana we make the acquaintance of with problem of immigrants and the way how to help immigrants people to integrate in society.
Moreover we had a possibility to get familiar with way of work with homeless people and received some more informations about problematics of drug dependent homeless people taht are majority of homeless population. We were amazed by possibility to participate on a mobile street work with homeless people in French Guyana. This experience led us to start this kind of social work in Slovakia. Visit of a projects for small children in nursery and discussions with a people from city council have helped us to understand efforts in a social field in French Guyana. Although we have found a lot of differences, for example majority of our homeless people in Slovakia are older and suffering from alcohol dependancy, or in our country we dont have to answer the problem of immigration, we were inspired by street work project so much that we have brought to Slovakia your know how and we have started a pilot project how to help people who are not able to find a help on their own.
In Italy we had oportunity to understand some efforts in a social field of City council of Milano regarding immigration, social housing strategy...
We also visit several different typs of child nurseries. We were amazed by a creative way of work with children using adventures of arts and science at so early age. It was interesting to see your individual focused approach to a child development with understanding of each child as a individual and using various stimulus in cooperation of what is child interested in.
The individual approach was enabled by a fact that childrens were divided in small groups of ten, so one tutor takes care of ten children maximum.
It was inspiring to visit a project for a women prisoners with a small babies. Very unique project focused on a needs of a innocent baby that previosly were some kind of punished by being locked with their mothers and suffered the lack of stimulations and the lack of basic feeling of safety as normal children do. Calm, not frustrated mother can make the most important begining period of life of her child happy. This first experiences as any psychoanalist tell you, can make the future life of child enourmosly different and better.
We have visited a project for homeless dealing with providing shelters and also help with integration to labour market. We were amazed about the same starting points of project with our employment project with protected lodging and employment programme providing job possibilities. It was great to visit the medical help project for homeless and immigrants ran by charity. The project overcame the obstacles caused by laws by providing medical care for people in need by great work of volunteers and the ambulances were so well arranged that a lot of slovak doctors would loved to work in there.
So we had oportunity to see both sides of human being. On one side work with a new born lifes and its development and on other side fall of humans and system of work on his return.
It was very interesting to compare the institutions works with homeless ran by state or city council and those ran by charities. We have found similarity that mostly those institutions ran by third sector including charitis were smaller and more flexible to client´s needs.
It was very enriching visit and compare the way of work with homeless in Italy and French Guyana. We were able to have a short look into a social system of help in both countries. Focusing on work with homeless people we are facing the same problems with small specific differences. It was inspiring and fortification for us to see how creative ways of help to those in needs can be found facing the desperate looking situation of a bad laws.
The received informations help us in our current work, and also help us in our media outputs and public discussions. The most concrete contribution of our cooperation was above mentioned project of mobile street work which was not planned in this project and came to existance naturally as a result of changing ideas. It was product of our cooperation and also the proof that it is better to see once than heard for a thousand times. Thanks to experience of mobile street work in French Guyana we have received a lot of practical informations that helped us to avoid problems in realisation and have helped us to provide services more efficiently than starting on our own.
Nowdays thanks to our cooperation we are able to provide homeless people in capital Bratislava every day with possibilty of informations of services fro homeless, with social counselling, with possibility of transport to medical service or nightshelter, in winter time we also provide them with food and warm clothes and blankets.
